Love Destiny (Bhuppae Saniwaat) || Lakorn Review

I don't usually watch Thai dramas, in fact, this was my FIRST Thai lakorn ever so please keep that in mind as you read my review. ^_^ I just randomly stumbled onto this show on MyDramaList and saw that it had not only really high ratings but also TIME-TRAVEL so I knew I had to check this show out. And guess what? I ended up LOVING this show. It's so good and even though it might take some time to get used to hearing Thai if you haven't been exposed to South Asian languages a lot (like me), it is such a worthwhile watch!

The entire show has been subbed by the amazing MUSE translation group. They also sub other lakorns! This is so rare for non-English shows/movies, so please go support them!

All the couples~
A quick summary of Love Destiny or บุพเพสันนิวาส: Kadesurang, an archaeologist, stumbles along a ghost-like maiden with her buddy archaeologist, Reung, and the next thing she knows, the ghost-like maiden, who is actually named Karakade, asks for her help. Suddenly, Kadesurang's in the body of Karakade, a well-off woman who lived around 400 years ago. Even better is that Karakade is known to be vicious and cruel to anyone that gets in her way. How will Kadesurang fair in her new body and help to redeem Karakade's name for all of her cruel actions?

What I liked about it:
  • Time-travel aspect: History buff time-traveling back to an era that they actually are knowledgeable about; very interesting to see how Kade reacts to everything
  • Slow burn romance: I appreciated there wasn't many makeout or intimate scenes because 1) it doesn't suit the time period and 2) if you've got sizzling chemistry, who cares about how often they smooch or hold hands; overall, it was a good, pure romance...Pope and Bella (played Por Date and Kade respectively) did such a great job!
  • Modern day girl thrown into ancient times realism: There are several scenes where other characters are asking Kade what she means by her slang and modern way of talking, which really points out how speech and language have changed over time. I don't think I've seen a show that has done this so thoroughly as Love Destiny
  • No unnecessary drama or conflict: this one kind of threw me off and I didn't know whether I truly liked it or not but you know what? Sometimes I like fluff and happy plots. Also it drives the story (and history) forward without a break, which is refreshing.
What I did not like about it:

    King Narai (Nai Luang)
  • Politics: Because I'm usually not that much of a politics person, I just thought this aspect of the story was not that interesting. I did, however, pay more attention once during the middle of the story (*spoiler* that led to a character death) and at the end, where everything was building to a climax.
  • Phaulkon's relationship with Maria: one word....ew.
  • Hard to explain this one without giving out spoilers but...Kade's curiosity and brashness is sometimes so excessive but not once does it feel like she's actually in real danger; but this could be a good thing depending on what you want in a show (fluff vs. angst)...I'll explain this more in the spoiler discussion below.
So if you've never watched a Thai lakorn before, the question you may be asking is if Love Destiny is a good one to start with and I'd say YES YES YES. I mean, it's not the most popular lakorn in Thailand for no reason (even prisoners got to watch it recorded.) There may be certain aspects to the culture or language or how people address each other that may be confusing but I assure it, it will make more sense as you continue watching (also google search helps.)

Beware of spoilers below!

In-depth discussion:
  • Time-travel and resolution with Karakade
    • I thought the whole connection between Karakade and Kadesurang was super interesting and well-done
    • I really liked how Karakade's little temper tantrum about Kade marrying Por Date before her didn't last long and they finally understood each other. I really think Kade's character is selfless! If I were in her situation, I would not be able to tolerate Karakade. Well, maybe that's a result of their twin connection.
    • How Kadesurang loses connection to her old world: the scene were her mom, grandma, and Reung were grieving over her death got me in TEARS!!! It was just totally unfair for her family and Reung so I didn't really like this part but at the same time, I understood it was necessary especially since Kade and Por Date are destined to be with each other.
  • Romance
    • Por Date and Kade:

      Being silly :P
      • I may or may not have squealed every time they had a romantic scene together...I seriously loved seeing these two on screen together. It's so funny how Kade intrigues Por Date so much that he's always weirdly watching/glancing at her but then you discover that Kade can't help but keep staring and looking for him as well.
      • My favorite moment #1 is when Por Date stares at Kade from her window at night and his shocked reaction to her doing yoga. Favorite moment #2 is the whole moon scene. UGH SO CUTE. At this point, Por Date is completely smitten with Kade, and then Kade likes him too but she's not too sure of what to make of his words and actions. I think she felt nervous and that's why she was playing hard to get LOL (I feel ya, girl).
    •  Phaulkon and Maria:
      • So their relationship is extremely toxic and I felt really uncomfortable watching any scenes with them together. What I found interesting was that Phaulkon's actor, Louis, and Yam's actress, Noon are married IRL and there's an interview (the whole thing is hilarious) where the other cast members explain that Louis wasn't really into the "romantic" scenes of his character since Noon was watching like a hawk over him LOL
    • Por Reung and Junward:
      • Their relationship was cute towards the end but it seemed a little forced in my opinion. Like, oh poor Junward had her heart broken and Por Reung is single sooo...why not pair them together? I feel like that was the mindset the writers had. Panjan (plays Reung) and Prang (plays Junward) did kind of hint that their characters had something going on (whether or not it's just sexual tension from Por Reung lol) but it all worked out a bit too nicely in the end. I don't think we saw enough development between them so I wasn't really convinced on them as a couple (and it might also be due to Panjan and Prang not being able to show much chemistry together.)
  • Misc.
    • History/Politics
      • Obviously some parts are dramatized because who really knew what went down in history but from some quick google searches, the plot line seemed to be accurate to what went on in history (Phaulkon gets taken down and Maria was about to be taken prisoner but in the end didn't, which was different from history). I'm sure that people really interested in Thai history had a blast watching this show though.
    • Costumes
      • Beautiful costumes! I liked how the women didn't really do anything super weird to their hair. Bella looked GORGEOUS in everything that she wore and it made me have a lot more appreciation for traditional Thai wear (mostly because I didn't really know what it looked like before this LOL)
      • My favorite type of outfit has to be what women wear when they go to do merit/go to temple. Junward and Kade wore them. It's not a dress but rather a long sleeve tunic and pants and it's such a nice, charismatic look.
      • Also I could totally get used to seeing Pope and Panjan half-naked.
    • Set
      • Absolutely beautiful. I wonder if there are actually preserved historical towns or that some of the buildings are CG.
    • Editing
      • Some shots I was just really disappointed with because it would be an image, I repeat, an IMAGE, of the whole surrounding area (river and buildings). I know Thai dramas are not up there in production as opposed to, say, Korean dramas BUT you can at least put a little CG on the water or something or a bird flying or just some movement in general instead of putting a still IMAGE as a transition.
      • MUSIC: So I loved the various OST played throughout the episodes BUT the transitions between some of the soundtracks were a little jarring. I think that's another point to work on, possibly including more silence in the scenes or just fading out one track into the other more smoothly.
      • But overall, I think the editing was pretty good, aside from these two things I noticed.
  • Ending
    • Kade's knowledge: So this is the part where I commented above that I couldn't really feel that Kade was really in danger at any point in the show. Yes there are various scenes like the boat flipping over and her sneaking into Phaulkon's residence, but we always see that everything turns out okay for her. This is especially weird since she lets out a lot of information through her mumbling (which other people do pick up and sometimes don't let it drop and asks her for clarification), which, I don't understand why she does that so often LOL like girl! You might end up changing history if certain people listened to you more! Also the ending -- oh the ENDING -- seemed to quickly tie itself into a pretty bow to wrap the story up, with Kade explaining how she knew what was going to happen in the first place. AND NO ONE IS MAD ABOUT THAT. It was only Kosa Ban and Por Date in that scene but STILL. Idk maybe it's just that I watched too many overdramatic shows that I'm just shocked that they would be so understanding of her but it did seem a little rushed in the end. I think I would've liked if they included a little scene where she got in trouble for revealing too much information. That would be more realistic, imo. Anyway, I'm just happy that they had a happy ending. :)
Last comments: Perhaps Love Destiny is a model for other shows to cut out the unnecessary drama and just focus on driving the plot forward. I actually enjoyed watching the show in its entirety rather than hating a certain story arc. Everything was really well-done and I was VERY impressed!

Looking forward to the second season in 2020 :O
